You Should Grow Your Hair

You should grow your hair out, he told her. I like girls with long hair.

So she tried and tried but her hair was still fine and breakable and fluffy like cotton candy. And if she worked real hard she could make it look nice but she didn’t have time for that. So she cut that hair back up close to her head and she felt like herself again.

You should wear heels, he told her. It’s cute when girls wear heels.

So she went to a little shop and bought some cute little heels and she wore them and he loved them. But she couldn’t run in heels, and she couldn’t dance very well and she couldn’t even march around with purpose like she liked to. So she threw those heels in the garbage and put her flats back on.

You should be softer, he told her. I like when girls are fragile so when they break I can put them back together and feel big and strong.

So she tried to need him more. She tried to figure out when to be afraid or vulnerable so he could feel like a real man. But she got tired of making herself small and decided she was soft enough the way she was and she decided to be strong again.

You should be less of a leader, he told her. I can’t be with you unless I can lead you.

So she tried to let him make decisions and act like she didn’t know what she should do. She asked him questions she knew the answer to and asked for help with things she could do herself. But she got tired of things going wrong when she knew she could do them right so she just threw her head back and laughed real loud and said, “You better find yourself another girl.”
